CYA: Tony Massarotti Edition

Looks like Tony Mazz's stereotyping of Dice-K didn't sit well with the folks at Boston.com.

"In retrospect, what Farrell did not say was that Matsuzaka looked like he spent the winter eating dumplings and shumai, which the Red Sox believe contributed to the pitcher's problems" has been changed to "In retrospect, what Farrell did not say was that Matsuzaka looked like he spent the winter eating cheeseburgers, which the Red Sox believe contributed to the pitcher's problems." Boston.com addressed the change in the comments: "Boston.com: While there certainly was no malice intended here, we do see how that description could be misinterpreted and have made an adjustment."

For what it's worth, he also corrected "Stay-Puft".

Good catch. That screeching pipsqueak should be put out to pasture.

I don't see the problem. Matsuzaka is a Japanese man; Massarotti named Japanese food. So?

Maybe Tony's been drinking too much sangria.

Alex-
The fact that you don't see a problem is the reason Boston natives get such a bad rap RE: racial sensitivity. Imagine if Randy Moss showed up to camp out of shape; and Maz said it was probably the result of too much fried shrimp and grape soda. What's the problem, he's just naming foods that black people like to eat, right?
The problem is that it's unnecessary stereotyping, and also complete hack journalism.

John - gee, and here I thought it was because our cops throw around terms like "jungle monkey." My bad.

I disagree, with all due respect; we're talking about nationality with Matsuzaka, not race (although I realize that's a fine line). I don't think the Randy Moss comparison is apt; a more appropriate one might be if Varitek showed up fat and we blamed it on too many cheeseburgers. Or Ortiz showed up fat and we blamed it on too much rice & beans. We're naming ethnic food here.

John, I get that you are psyched to run with the Red Sawx fans/Bawstan natives are dumb racists argument (and you're not 100% wrong) and I understand that the position of this blog is to excoriate the Sox up until the point they win the WS and then WHOO HOO I LOVE THESE GUYS, but let's not forget about Abner Louima and Amadou Diallo before we don the cloak of superiority here.

I'm not trying to stir shit up, but when you want to run a routine about "Boston natives," at least concede that the folks in the town you root for might be equally guilty of provincialism/scumminess/whatever you rightly ascribe to much of Bawston.
